Chorizo - a type of pork cured meat originating from the Iberian Peninsula: The Times
There are many ways of pronouncing chorizo – and nearly all of them are wrong. How many have you heard? Chore ee tho, corizzo, chor ee zo, chore itzo, choritt zo are some of those we have encountered.
According to Wikipedia, the pronunciation and spelling vary slightly among the Iberian languages and they list the local pronunciations as follows:
-
Asturleonese chorizu [tʃoˈɾiθu]
-
Basque: txorizo [tʃoˈɾis̻o]
-
Catalan: xoriço [ʃuˈɾisu]
-
Galician: chourizo [tʃowˈɾiθʊ]
-
Portugese: chouriço [ʃo(w)ˈɾisu]
-
Spanish: chorizo [tʃoˈɾiθo], [tʃoˈɾiso]
Thankfully, none of these makes any difference to the taste and there are far more ways of enjoying than there are of saying it.
In last weekend’s (1.7.23) Times Tony Turnbull and Hannah Evans came up with a tantalising selection of 6 chorizo based recipes which could transport you to the Iberian peninsula on a waft of smoke and paprika. All beautifully photographed by Romas Foord, half of them in Netherton prospector pans.
