Eat like a native, cook like a chef: The Observer

Observer 5th January 2025.

Mike Keen does not tackle things by halves!

Well, sort of. As seen in today’s Observer, in 2023 Mike kayaked the west coast of Greenland and then in 2024 he tackled the east coast.  Along the way he chose to eat a native diet, a far cry from his day to day cooking as a chef.  And because the change from his normal eating habits was so drastic, combined with the physical exertion of kayaking around 30km in sub Arctic conditions, he worked with Professor Tim Spector and  King’s College , London to monitor the effect on his body and his health.  The results of eating a diet of fat-rich, animal proteins were dramatic and not in the ways you might expect.  Weight loss and “improvement in virtually all his health parameters” were not in themselves a surprise to the scientists, but more surprising was how dramatically they improved.

We were delighted to provide Mike with a standard prospector pan for his first trip, which you can see in the main photo.  But we went all out for the second trip and made him a tin-lined copper pan with titanium handles, which you can see in the inset, with his dinner of capelin fried in seal fat and whale blubber!
