Watch Mexican chef Santiago Lastra from KOL using the Netherton Tortilla Press on James Martin's Saturday Kitchen

James Martin has had a glittering career, festooned with awards and prizes.  Just look at this listing on his Wikipedia to illustrate the point. “On 10 June 2013, Martin was honoured with The Craft Guild of Chefs Special Award.  In 2015 he was named ‘TV Personality of the Year’ at the Fortnum & Mason Awards.  James was inducted into the Guilde Internationale des Fromagers at the International Cheese Awards 2016. In 2021, Martin was again voted ‘TV Personality of the Year’ at the Fortnum and Mason Awards.  On 6 September 2021, Martin's Saturday Morning scooped Best Food Show at the TV Choice Awards. In November 2021, Martin won 'Most Influential Chef, Cook or Food Writer' award, and also 'Best Cookbook', for 'Great British Adventure: A celebration of Great British food' at the Great British Food Awards.

But not everything in James’ kitchen sparkles; regularly featured on his Saturday Kitchen programme is a well-used, black iron Netherton Foundry frying pan. This was joined on 1st April by Santiago Lastra’s equally, if not even more, used and much loved tortilla press, straight out of KOL’s restaurant kitchen, where it is in daily use. Santiago got James on the tortilla production line for his quesadillas with rhubarb salsa, click here for the recipe.

Santiago pointed out that although his restaurant celebrates and showcases the very best of Mexican cuisine, he has been very keen to use and promote British produce, from the ceramics and tortilla presses to the oaxaca cheese made by Gerry in Kent. And that’s where we came in, working with Santiago to create a tortilla press that not only looked good, but would also stand up to the rigours of a professional kitchen, where they make up to 500 tortillas a day!
